The abbreviations&nbsp;<em>AC<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>DC<\/em>&nbsp;are often used to mean simply&nbsp;<em>alternating<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>direct<\/em>, as when they modify&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_current\">current<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voltage\">voltage<\/a><\/em>.&nbsp;<strong>AC<\/strong>&nbsp;is the form in which electric power is delivered to businesses and residences.&nbsp;<strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alternating_current\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Further Reading\u2192<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amperage \u2013 Amps\/Amperes\/Ampacity\/Rated Amperage<\/strong>&nbsp;-measurement of the flow rate of electricity. A \u201ccord\u201d would be acable by this definition so far, but a cable is part of a permanent installation; a cord is more flexible and often has a plug end for a portable appliance or lamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cable Harness<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A string of cables and\/or wires which transmit informational signals or operating currents (energy). The cables are bound together by clamps, cable ties, cable lacing, sleeves, electrical tape, conduit, a weave of extruded string, or a combination thereof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CE-Conformite Europeene.<\/strong>&nbsp;A European standard of safety. The CE marking on end productsindicates compliance with all applicable directives. Copper is the most common material used for electrical wiring. Silver is the best conductor, but is expensive. Because it does not corrode, gold is used for high-quality surface-to-surface contacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Connector<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013A female cord mounted wiring device with the conducting elements recessed behind the mating surface. This type of device is normally wired to be live when nothing is plugged in to it. Therefore, connectors are wired to the source of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CSA \u2013Canadian Standards Association,<\/strong>&nbsp;a Canadian product safety and certification organization. Their registered mark shows that a product has been independently tested and certified to meet recognized standards for safety or performance. Electric current is measured in amperes or \u201camps\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><strong>D<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dielectric&nbsp;\u2013Any insulating medium, which intervenes between two conductors and permits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">electrostatic attraction and repulsion to take place across it.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dielectric Test<\/strong>&nbsp; &nbsp;Tests which consist of the application of a voltage higher than that of the rated voltage for aspecified time for the purpose of determining the adequacy against breakdown of insulatingmaterials and spacing under normal conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DC \u2013Direct Current.<\/strong>&nbsp;Current which moves in a single direction in a steady flow. Normal house old electricity is alternating current (AC) which repeatedly reverses its direction. However, many electronics devices require DC, and therefore must convert the current into DC before using it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><strong>E<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><strong>F<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><strong>G<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GFCI \u2013 Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter.<\/strong>&nbsp;An electrical wiring device that disconnects a circuit whenever it detects that the electric current is not balanced between the energized conductor and the return neutralconductor. Such an imbalance is sometimes caused by current leakage through the body of a person who is grounded and accidentally touching the energized part of the circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ground<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A connection between an electrical device and the Earth or at the voltage defined as zero (in the U.S., called ground; in the UK, called earth).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><strong>H<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Harmonized Code<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013An international coding system for specifying the attributes of cord voltages, jackets, diameters, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hertz<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013Measurement of frequency, equaling one cycle per second, U.S. devices are typically 60 Hertz and international devices are typically 50 hertz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><strong>I<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ICC \u2013International Color Code.<\/strong>&nbsp;Standard for wire jacket colors; Hot=Brown, Neutral=Blue, Ground=Green\/Yellow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>IEC \u2013International Electrotechnical Commission,<\/strong>&nbsp;an international organization that sets standards for electrical products<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>IEC320<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013IEC standard of thirteen 2 or 3 wire plugs, connectors, inlets or outlets usually used in the computer industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Inlet<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013A male flange mounted wiring device with the conducting pins protruding and exposed. This type device should never be wired to make the exposed pins live while the mating device is unplugged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Insulation<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013The material that encases a conductor preventing leakage of current from a conductor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>IP Rating \u2013Ingress Protection Rating,<\/strong>&nbsp;a two digit code, and an optional letter, specifying the level of protection from foreign objects with the first digit referring to protection from solids and the second digit referring to protection from liquids. The optional letter can be appended to classify only the level of protection against access to hazardous parts by persons or to provide additional information related to the protection of the device. Materials restricted include: Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent Chromium, Polybrominated Byphenyls, and PlybrominatedDiphenyl Ether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ROJ<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 The designation to Remove Outer Jacket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><strong>S<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Slitting<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 The designation to separate insulated parallel wires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Straight Blade<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Refers to a NEMA device with straight prongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stripping<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013The designation of the removal of the insulation or jacket from a conductor\/wire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><strong>T<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Temperature Rating<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013The maximum temperature at which insulation will maintain its integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Terminal<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013A terminal is the point at which a conductor from an electrical component, device or network comes to an end and provides a point of connection to external circuits. A terminal may simply be the end of a wire or it may be fitted with a connector or fastener. The connection may be temporary, as for portable equipment, or may require a tool for assembly and removal, or may be a permanent electrical joint between two wires or devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Twist-Locking<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013Refers to a NEMA device with circular prongs that locks the connection in place. Locking connectors use curved blades. Once pushed into the receptacle, the plug is twisted and&nbsp; &nbsp;its now rotated blades latch into the receptacle. To unlatch the plug, the rotation is reversed.
